Industry Evolution: The new seals reflect the evolving landscape of clean beauty and sustainability, showcasing our commitment to staying at the forefront of these important movements.
Empowered Choices: With more information readily available through the new seals, you're empowered to make choices that align with your values and preferences.

We have collaborated with a team of experts to develop our seal, which involves gathering scientific insights and partnering with NGOs to ensure our "Clean at Sephora" & “Planet aware at Sephora” standards are aligned with sustainability goals. This effort guarantees a growing selection of brands that meet high standards and reflect our commitment to informed and sustainable choices.
THE EVOLUTION
The introduction of our new seals signifies an exciting evolution from our previous pastille system. Here's how the new seals differ:
Clearer Communication: Our new seals, including "Clean at Sephora”, "Planet Aware at Sephora”, “Naturality", “Refillable", and “Vegan", offer more precise and comprehensive information about each product's specific attributes. This ensures you can easily recognize the qualities that matter most to you.
Global Consistency: We've adopted a unified global standard for our new seals, making it simpler for you to recognize and trust these designations no matter where you shop with us.
Incorporating Key Criteria: Our new seals include a broader range of criteria, such as harmonized lists of restricted ingredients and considerations for sustainability and environmental impact.
We're thrilled to share these exciting updates to our "Clean at Sephora" program, demonstrating our continued commitment to clean beauty and sustainability:
Global Alignment: Our program has transitioned to a global standard, ensuring that the criteria for clean beauty is consistent across all regions.
Expanded Guidelines: The new "Clean at Sephora" seal now encompasses a harmonized list of restricted ingredients, addressing both safety and environmental concerns.
Holistic Focus: Our program maintains its focus on brand or sub-brand level certification, highlighting a brand's overall dedication to clean practices.
Comprehensive Seal System: In addition to "Clean at Sephora", we've introduced new seals like "Planet Aware", "Naturality", "Refillable", and "Vegan" to provide a holistic overview of a product's attributes.
These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to transparency, sustainability, and your empowerment to make informed choices. We're excited to continue supporting brands that align with evolving industry standards while helping you discover products that resonate with your values.
The introduction of the new seals represents an evolution towards a more unified and globally consistent approach. These new seals encompass "Clean at Sephora”, "Planet Aware”, “Naturality", “Refillable", and “Vegan". This transition has led to several key changes:
Updated and Harmonized Clean Standards: The existing programs, such as the "Good For" and "Planet Positive" seals, had distinct regional Clean standards. Our new approach involves harmonizing these standards on a global level, resolving regional discrepancies, and incorporating select additional criteria.
Expanded Clean Standards: The new "Clean at Sephora" seal covers a wider spectrum of criteria, including a harmonized list of restricted ingredients. Furthermore, the prohibition of controversial packaging materials impacting human health has been integrated.
Specific Seal Designations: Under the new system, the "Naturality" seal is now a separate designation at the SKU level, offering more clarity on products formulated with a high proportion of naturally-derived ingredients.
Consistent Brand or Sub-brand Level Placement: The "Clean at Sephora" seal is placed at the brand, reflecting a commitment to holistic brand practices.
These updates emphasize a streamlined approach to sustainable and clean beauty, ensuring that consumers can readily identify products that align with their values, while upholding stringent quality and safety standards.
The Clean at Sephora seal is only applicable to brands with products that comply fully with the 'Clean at Sephora' definition and 'formulated without' ingredient guidelines. For brands with assortments that are partially clean, the Clean at Sephora seal will be removed. This is to provide a clearer and better shopping experience for our customers.

At Sephora, we've established a comprehensive system to ensure brand compliance with our "Clean at Sephora" definition. With our seals, we’ve implemented a labeling system that recognizes brands voluntarily adhering to our "Clean at Sephora" standards. While not mandatory for all brands, this initiative focuses on celebrating and rewarding those brands that choose to meet our specific criteria.
Brands aspiring to carry the "Clean at Sephora" seal undergo a rigorous evaluation of their product formulas, which confirm that none of the ingredients listed in our 'formulated without' criteria are utilized. While minimal trace amounts are allowed, the overall formulation must align with our guidelines. Additionally, these brands commit to excluding these ingredients from their future products, showcasing their commitment to transparency and product safety.
Our dedication to this labeling approach ensures that products featuring the "Clean at Sephora” seal maintain high standards, allowing customers to confidently make informed choices that align with their values.
At Sephora, we’re committed to doing our part to ensure a bright future for our community and our planet. “Planet Aware at Sephora” is our ambition to push ourselves, and the entire industry, towards more sustainable practices. With the help of scientific and environmental experts, we have developed a standard built on four key sustainability pillars that all “Planet Aware at Sephora” brands respect a minimum of 30+ criteria across 4 pillars:
Sustainable Ingredients & Formula
Brands prioritize sustainably-sourced ingredients and formulas which are developed with a product’s entire lifecycle in mind to reduce its overall impact, even after you’ve finished using it.
They guarantee that products are free of solid microplastics and they do not test finished products on animals.
Sustainable Packaging
We curate brands with embedded efforts to reduce packaging waste where possible, promoting more refillable, recyclable and compostable packaging, as well as sourcing and using more sustainable packaging materials to maximize recycled content.
They guarantee that at least 50% of products are designed for recyclability, refillable or compostable. (25% for make-up brands).
They guarantee that plastic parts of packaging average at least 30% of PCR content or other sustainably sourced and recyclable biomaterial.
They guarantee that 100% of paperboard is made of recycled cardboard or 3rd party verified for sustainably managed forests.
Corporate Commitments
We curate brands that strive to make efforts and incorporate an environmental ethos into what they do, including measuring and tracking their footprint and setting targets to reduce their environmental impact.
Consumer Transparency
Brands provide clear information on product environmental impact to help customers make informed choices on the products they choose, such as advice on usage, how to best sort and recycle product packaging, as well as referring them to tools that provide key environmental information.
At Sephora, we have established a robust system to ensure that brands that adhere to our "Planet Aware at Sephora" standards are appropriately recognized. This initiative operates as a labeling system, signifying brands that have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability. While not all brands are obligated to meet these specific criteria, we take pride in celebrating and rewarding those that do.
By collaborating with brands that exemplify the principles of "Planet Aware at Sephora”, we aim to ensure a beautiful future for the beauty industry and the environment. Through our recognition and support, we encourage brands to adopt more sustainable practices, fostering a community that values conscious choices. This effort reflects our commitment to offering customers a curated selection of products that align with their values, contributing to a more responsible beauty landscape.

The below 'Formulated Without List is our most current version. We have added to this list over time as new information has been made available, and will continue to do so as needed. The 'formulated without' does not guarantee '100% free from since trace contaminants are possible. It is not the intention of Clean at Sephora to test for trace contaminants or guarantee 100% free-from, but we encourage our brands to engage in thorough- contaminant testing of raw materials and final formulas.
